Danske Bank (Northern Bank Trading As)
This is the new £10 Polymer note series issued by Danske Bank on 27.02.2019. The note is printed with the date of 06.07.2017. The announcement of this new note was made on 06.11.2018. Unlike Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank, this is the only polymer note issued by Danske Bank as both Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank have also issued a £5 polymer note each.
The main features of the note is basically the same as the last paper note series.
Front - portrait of John Boyd Dunlop (1840-1921). JB Dunlop was born a Scotsman but spent most of his career life in Ireland. He was a veterinary surgeon and re-invented pneumatic tyres. His only son (also named John Boyd JNR Dunlop b. 1877-1920) is also featured on the note riding the first bicycle with inflatable tyres which was first invented by JB Dunlop for his son’s bicycle and patented it on 07.12.1888. Sadly to say that the son died one year before JB Dunlop Senior. Today, the Dunlop brand is universally known and is not just associated with tyres for motor vehicles, but also in products like construction materials, furniture, sporting goods, footwear etc.
Back - fascia of City Hall Belfast. Like all polymer notes, a see-through window is also included in the design.
Unlike those polymer notes issued by the Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank, this note is printed with 7-digit serial number.
Danske Bank is owned by a Danish based group called Danske Bank S/A (established in 1871). In November 2004, the Northern Bank, together with National Irish Bank, were bought by the Danske Bank from the National Australia Bank Limited following its decision to exit all banking operations from the Irish banking markets. In November 2012, Northern Bank then adopted its parent company name, Danske Bank as its trading name (Northern Bank Trading As Danske Bank). Whilst this is the first time Danske Bank has issued a polymer note, it should be noted that Northern Bank had issued a £5 Polymer note with MM prefix in 1999 and then another £5 (same design as 1999 issue but with Y2K prefix) was released in 2000 celebrating the Y2K Millennium. This 1999 note was the first polymer note ever issued in the United Kingdom, and it's also the first note printed on a vertical format both front and back.
The announcement for this new polymer note was released on 06/11/2018.
