This is a set of new series of "Ran Dhihafaheh" (Golden 50) Polymer notes issued on 26.01.2016, with denominations from 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Rufiyaa. The launching for this new series was supposed to be made in October 2015 but was postponed without any official reason given. The intention was to introduce these new notes into circulation in December 2015. The 5 Rufiyaa has been replaced by a coin. Like the 5000 Rufiyaa, a new denomination of 1000 Rufiyaa has also been included in this new series. This is the first time in more than 30 years that a new series of banknotes is introduced by the Central Bank. The notes bear the governor signature of Dr Azeema Adam. All notes were printed by De la Rue. DLR has been printing Maldivian banknotes since 1947.

In addition to the general issue, the central bank has also released the full set in a presentation folder with all notes printed with matching serial numbers. A total of 421 sets were issued to the public. The numbers selected are based on the date format from 05/11/2015 to 31/12/2016, therefore the first set of the folder is A051015 to A311216 ie October 2015 - 27 sets, November 2015 - 30 sets; December 2015 - 31 sets; and 2016 - 366 sets = 454 sets. This set that I have posted here has the date of 10/10/2016 (ie A101016 / ހ‎101016). The new notes are all printed with the date 5 October 2015 on the reverse. It is not sure why they did not use the low serial numbered notes instead for this special occasion.

To assist those who are visually impaired, all notes are printed with indented tactile features: -
10 Rufiyaa - 14 dots in a shape of a triangle;
20 Rufiyaa - 13 dots in a shape of a capital squarish letter C;
50 Rufiyaa - 13 dots in a shape of a cross (X);
100 Rufiyaa - 16 dots in a shape of a square;
500 Rufiyaa - 5 dots each in two vertical lines; and
1000 Rufiyaa - 12 dots in a shape of a circle.
