...Haiti - 10 Groudes Dated 2013 Polymer

This is the long awaited polymer note from Haiti. Whilst this note was reported much earlier, only recently it has been released to the public for circulation. It is interesting to note that whilst this note has a year dated of 2013, the previously 10 Groudes paper note issued has a year date of 2014. I am not sure why this was the case. Also it is believed that this could be the only letter prefix M printed in polymer, presumably a maximum total of 10 million pieces. The 2012 paper note print was printed with prefix L and the 2014 issue was printed with prefix N. Unless there are crossed over prefixes printed. Is this a one-off polymer print for this denomination? The other question to ask is why they issued the 2014 series first before this polymer note?

Perhaps the seller also bought his stock from the same supplier. Both notes are consecutive pairs and all four notes are in uncirculated condition.

...Haiti - Political Note Private Overprint

This is a political note

This is a political note celebrating the fall of the Duvalier government in 1986. The date overprinted "7 Fev. 1986" on the note was the day the Duvalier Government (President Jean-Claude Duvalier) was overthrown by a popular uprising in Haiti. It is also the day that Jean-Claude Duvalier and his family accepted assistance from the US government and fled the country for France. Some may argue that this is a propaganda note which I disagree with, as the date printed on the note represents the fall of a government. To me, the word propaganda would have a meaning of - biased, misleading or simply lies or untruth. I do not believe that the buster overprint on the note was sanctioned by the Central Bank of The Republic of Haiti. It is also believed that the overprint was done in the United States mainly by Haitian exiles opposed to the Papa Doc's regime. One may even argue that this is more like a souvenir note rather than a political one. I am not sure as to how many pieces were printed but whatever figures you read, these are just speculation only. One thing for sure is that the number printed is in excess of a few hundred pieces, maybe more or maybe less. I am not surprised if they are still making this overprint, after all it's now getting popular among collectors and the artist may want to cash in more. I got this before it became popular and I am sure mine came from the initial first print run LOL! I bought this note from a local dealer purely out of curiosity. Most of the overprints sighted are on the 'S' prefix notes only.

My opinion. Unless you really want one, the current ridiculous price is not worth it.

This note is also known as the "Buster note", or even a note with "No parking sign on it".

...Haiti 2 Gourde Error Note

Minor Error Tyvek Note - Missing Brownish Underprint

 

The normal note was purchased from a local dealer, whilst the error note came from a dealer in Vancouver BC Canada. Both the Canadian dealer and the Australian dealer knew each other. I was not aware of the error when I first got it, and the dealer sold the note as normal. I only discovered this when I realised the error note looks a bit brighter than the normal note. You can see the differences when you have the two notes to compare side by side.

There is no shortage in supply for all Haiti tyvek specimen notes, but unfortunately most of these are in collectors' hands. Most of the collectors would have these notes in more than one quantity and most of them are just hoarding them hoping that one day the price for these notes will go through the roof, and that's including me too. Daydreaming is always good, and more importantly it's still free!

Note: Missing prefixes are 'Q', 'R', 'U' and possibly even more. It is believed that the Prefix 'O' was not used in this series for obvious reasons. And no one knows how many prefixes were printed. Until recently we all thought that prefix 'T' was the last prefix until prefix 'U' was sighted. And you may ask how many prefixes were printed? Your guess is as good as mine - NFI!

The note with the prefix C was bought here via a postal auction, and that was the top bid I had offered. That was in the early 90s, and the Internet was not popular yet. I was surprised no one bidded more against me. This is now a scarce note in this grade and finding one in UNC condition is very hard now. No doubt, the asking price for one in UNC would not be cheap now if one is found.

The note with Prefix D was acquired via a collector friend in Europe and I paid €70 for this note. This note is circulated and I would grade this note as EF with one light fold.

World First Plastic Banknote

 

As it said above, this is the world's first plastic banknote. This note was acquired via a local dealer through a postal auction. The price that I have paid for was my top bid in the early 90s, and in those days, there were not that many crazy collectors that would go all out to get this note at any cost. Believe me, as I had paid my fair share for those ridiculously selling prices for a few other Haiti tyvek notes but I am pleased that I did not have to fork out more for this note.
