.Namibia - $30 Dated 2020 Commemorative 30th Year of Independence 1990-2020 Polymer Note

Republic of Namibia

Bank of Namibia
Currency : Dollar (NAD)

This is Namibia's first commemorative note issued since the country gained independence in 1990. This note was issued on 21/03/2020, celebrating the country's 30th year of independence from South Africa. Namibia gained independence on 21/03/1990. Namibia was once known as South West Africa and was first occupied by the German from 1884 and was then called German South West Africa. During the First World War, South African troops occupied the country and continued to occupy the land after the war ended under the mandate of the League of Nations. In 1966, fighting broke out when the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), a military wing of South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO) attacked South African forces, using their bases, first in Zambia and then later in Angola. The war was later known as the Namibian War of Independence and it went on until 1990 when independence was finally granted.

In addition to this commemorative banknote, coins are also minted for this special celebration.

This new commemorative $30 note is printed on polymer substrate. The note depicts three decades of independence and the smooth transfer of power between the three presidents; Samuel Shafiishuna Daniel Nujoma (1990 - 2005), Hifikepunye Lucas Pohamba (2005 - 2015) and Hage Gottfried Geingob (since 2015). The diamond shaped window is printed with "30" in gold ink. The design of the main transparent window is in the shape of a rhinoceros's horn. The test of "3 Decades of Peace and Stability" is printed underneath the three portraits.

On the back is the image of two Namibian Black Rhinoceros (hook-lipped Rhinoceros). Black rhinos can be found mainly on the eastern and southern parts of Africa. The Coat of Arms is also printed on the top of the note too.

It should be noted that the Black Rhinoceros is not the national animal of Namibia. This honour goes to the oryx. The current 100 dollars is printed with three oryxes on the back of the note.
