These are the latest or current series, first released in 2018. This full set consists of five notes all printed on polymer material. This is the first time a full set of banknotes are issued in polymer, with the exception of the 50,000 colones denomination. However, this is not the first time that Costa Rica has issued polymer banknote, as in 2009, it released a 1000 colones polymer note.
The designs for this new series are similar to those issued from 2009 to 2015, however on the back, the main features are print on a mirror image to the previous issues.

One Thousand Colones
Braulio Carillo Colina was a Head of State of Costa Rica and was born in 1800 and died (killed) in 1945, in El Salvador. He twice served as the Head of State from 1835 to 1837 and again in 1838 to 1842. In 1881, he made himself the Head of State for life. He was overthrown in 1842 when Francisco Morazan invaded Costa Rica and Braulio Carillo Colina went into exile in El Salvador.
The back of the note features a White tailed deer, Guanacaste tree and Costa Rica Pitahaya cactus flower.

On the back is the
scene of a coral reef with a shark and other sea creatures.

Five Thousand Colones (139mm x 67mm)
The main feature for the 5000 colones on the front is printed with the portrait of Alfredo
Gonzalez Flores. Flores was the country's President from 2014 to 2017
and was forced to step down following a coup d'état led by his Secretary
for War and Navy, Federico Tinoco. Tinoco ruled the country as a
dictator from 1917 and then forced to resign in 1919.

On the back, this
note features a mono cara blancs, a white-faced monkey and a cangrejo
mannera (crab).

Ten Thousand Colones
Jose Figueres Ferrer was born in 1906 and died in 1990. He was a politicain and served as the President of Costa Rica on three occasions from 1948 to 1949; 1953 to 1958 and from 1970 to 1974.
The back features a three-toed aloth climbing up a tree, with the rainforest background

Twenty Thousand Colones

Maria Isabel Carvajal is featured on the 20,000 colones note. Isabel is also known as Carmen Lyra and was born in 1888 and died in 1949. She was a writer, communist and a Women's Rights Advocate.
On the back of this
note is printed with a Chispita hummingbird, landscape, sunflower and
coffee plant.
