...Angola - 2020 New Series Polymer and Paper

República de Angola
(Republic of Angola)

Banco Nacional de Angola
(National Bank of Angola)
Currency : Kwanza (AOA)

On 07.07.2020, José de Lima Massano, governor of the Banco Nacional de Angola, presented to Parliament the new Series of 2020 family of banknotes. The purpose of this new series of banknotes is to improve its durability by printing those lower denominations in polymer substrate and also protection against forgeries.

This new series are all printed with a natural wonder theme on the back. These notes were all released in stages from the lowest denomination to the highest.

The release dates were:

30.07.2020 - 200 kwachas;
17.09.2020 - 200 kwachas;
01.10.2020 - 1000 kwachas;
11.11.2020 - 2000 kwachas;
04.02.2021 - 5000 kwachas; and
To be issued - 10000 kwachas

The new notes are all printed on the front with the portrait of the late Dr António Agostinho Neto (b.1922-1979), first President of Angola. Angola was once occupied by the Portuguese and gained independence on 11.11.1975. Dr António Agostinho Neto was the president of the newly independent State from 1975 to 1979. He was the leader of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and successfully let the country from the war of independence from Portugal and South Africa. He died in Moscow, Russia in 1979 from cancer.

Between 1984 and 2012, all banknotes were printed with the portraits of Dr António Agostinho Neto  and José Eduardo dos Santos. However, for this new series, only the portrait of Dr António Agostinho Neto is printed on the notes. It is believed that this was a  political move by the current president, Joao Lourenco. José Eduardo dos Santos was the country's third president from 1979 to 2017 and Joao Lourenco took over the role on 26.09.2017.

Footnote
Angola is relatively considered to be a poor country. Whilst Angola has vast minerals and oil reserves, and has one of the highest economic growth in Africa, only a small portion of the population benefited from this. The Angola kwanza is a weak currency on the international stage and these notes that I have been sold are more expensive than gold in weight. Are there any restrictions in taking cash out of the country? I am getting conflicting answers on this question.
